Students from Faithful Catholic Colleges Attend, Serve at Papal Events

Today Pope Francis-watchers gather at The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C., which has eagerly anticipated the Holy Father’s visit to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, adjacent to the University. More than 500 students participated in community service activities as part of the University’s “Serve with Francis Day” on September 13. Many academic lectures and discussions have also revolved around Pope Francis’ call to service.

“It’s such a historic event,” said Brianna Howard of Smethport, Pa., a sophomore at Catholic University of America, who has been watching preparations from her dormitory overlooking the basilica grounds. “Every single day something new is going on” in anticipation of the Mass.

She is among numerous students from the university who have tickets to the Mass, and she also volunteered for the cleanup crew. As a politics major, she said she’s particularly intrigued by the pope’s scheduled address to a joint meeting of Congress this week and his speaking out on issues such as climate change.

Preparing for Pope's Arrival

One of the pope's first stops in Washington Tuesday will be at "Catholic University of America". So, how are the preparations for the Pope are coming along?

"It's been tough to get to my classes because of all the barriers." Kevin Ross is a sophomore at Catholic University. He says he's been told to leave fifteen minutes earlier for classes this week. And to be prepared for security checks.
